In addition to the cost of the initial consultation (£30) with our private GPs, the cost of the prescription, which is dispensed by the chemist will have to be paid, in full, by the patient. We have listed costs of some common items on this page. Occasionally some private prescriptions will cost less than the standard NHS prescription charge.

Repeat prescriptions, where appropriate, can be ordered by post, fax, e-mail, or through this website.

National Health Service Prescriptions have an upper cost limit to the patient, which is the price of the fixed  prescription charge (of approximately £6.10 per item).

In the case of private prescriptions the full cost of the prescription has to be paid for by the patient.

Because of this the prescriptions which we will usually issue are for those items which are difficult (and in some circumstances impossible to obtain from an NHS GP.

These private prescription costs can be significant. Examples of High Steet Chemist's prices for items include:-

Relenza (for Flu)  1 inhalator for 5 days treatment £35.00 (high street chemists £37)

Relanza is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers and children below the age of 12. Special caution should be observed in asthma and in patients with chronic chest diseases.

We have arranged a fixed discount on the price of private prescriptions, from specific chemists, for patients who use this service. The cost of these discounted prescriptions represent a considerable saving, particularly for those medication which may be need to be taken regularly.

Relenza

Prescriptions for Relenza, whenever possible, should be obtained from a patient's own NHS GP.

In circumstances where it is has proved totally impossible for patients to obtain either an NHS FP10 or a private prescription from their own GP we can arrange for patients (who are suitable) to receive a prescription for Relenza through our services provided they have flu - an illness characterised by fatigue, temperature and joint or muscle pain.

To obtain a prescription for Relenza through our services

• You will need to contact us by telephone (01772 655599) fax (01772 909080) or E mail (admin@ppms.net).

• Your eligibility for Relenza will be checked and if you are suitable, (see the prescription criteria listed opposite) you will be issued a private prescription for Relenza. 

• The chemist will then dispense this prescription to you. The time taken for the process should be less than two. The total cost of this service (assessment, consultation, issue of prescription and the dispensing of Relenza to you) is £40 - (less than the price charged by some major high street chemists simply for dispensing the prescription privately) - please add £5 for first class delivery if you are unable to collect the Relenza.

Viagra

The cost of 4 tablets of 50 mg Viagra is £28 at chemists with whom we have an arrangement for patients registered with this service.

To register with our service you will need to make an appointment to see our private GP. The appointment will last approximately 20 minutes and will include a prescription if (as is usual) this is appropriate. The cost of this appointment and written prescription will be £30.

Xenical

We have arranged a discounted price for the cost of Xenical. A one month's course of Xenical costs £55. Repeat prescriptions are can be ordered through this website for the same price (please add £5 for postage and packing if required).

Xenical must be used with a diet to obtain satisfactory results.

To obtain a prescription for Xenical, through our services, you will need to make an appointment to see our private GP. Please bring a urine specimen with you to the consultation.

Repeat prescriptions for Xenical, once authorised, can be requested by telephone, E Mail (dds@ppms.net), fax or post. Prescriptions can be sent out by first class post or left for collection from our centres in Preston and Clitheroe.

Extras

A range of other medications can be prescribed through our services which will all be dispensed at discount by participating chemists.

It is always preferable to obtain the medication you need, if you can, from your own GP who has an in depth knowledge of your past history. 

The medications listed above, which we can supply,  are all "special cases" in which highly effective treatments have been largely excluded from NHS provision on the grounds of cost - i.e. the treatments which the NHS now provides to patients are being limited on grounds of cost. 

We exist to enable people who are prepared to pay for these effective treatments to obtain them in an efficient, ethical and economical way.

There are no further on-going costs or registration fees with our service. Our medical practice has been established for over 100 years and, following the £1M construction of our new premises on a site we now share Preston's Sainsbury's. Our Blackpool premises are also new and well located in Bispham. Our fees are designed to cover our costs, whilst we provide services which are either difficult to obtain, or unavailable, through the NHS.
