The
NHS acts as a highly effective safety net for acute illnesses. It's
continuing success in this area is largely due to the dedication of
NHS staff who work in a system which most authorities now accept is
seriously under funded when compared with Britain's European
partners.
Almost
all patients in the UK will need to be registered with an NHS GP to
obtain NHS General Practice services.
Limited
NHS funding has, however, created rationing in the NHS. NICE (The
National Institute of Clinical Excellence) has recently recommended
that Relenza, the new treatment for Flu, should not currently be
prescribed at NHS expense. Viagra is an example of another treatment
which is only available to a very limited number of patients, at NHS
expense, and then only at a frequency of one tablet per week (see
Publications on this site).
